Dear Colleagues,

Since our last Public Health Alert, Ottawa has now reached a rate of 173.7 COVID-19 cases per 100,000 population reported in the previous 7 days, and we are now under the provincial Stay-at-Home Order. Thank you for helping to keep transmission to a minimum at this time – every effort helps. This week we’d like to update you on the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine availability in Ottawa.

AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine availability in pharmacies

AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine is available in select pharmacies in the Ottawa area. Please direct patients to the Ottawa Public Health website for information on locations, and patient information regarding the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine.

  • Please note that the OPH page directs patients to the provincial site to look up the pharmacy availability. This provincial site lists each area of Ottawa separately, so in order to find all vaccinating pharmacies, a patient must either enter their postal code, or check under all the regions (Kanata, Ottawa, Manotick, etc.)
  • Please note that the provincial vaccine eligibility website also states “Your primary care provider may contact you to book an appointment for the AstraZeneca vaccine. Primary care providers will not be taking appointments by request.” If you find that patients are calling your office to obtain vaccine and you do not plan to vaccinate in your office, please consider setting your phone tree to redirect patients to OPH’s COVID-19 vaccine website to book appointments/ find a pharmacy.

At the moment the vaccine is only available for eligible individuals over the age of 55 in 2021. More information about the vaccine can be found in our previous Public Health Alert.

AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine – opportunities to vaccinate in your clinic

The provincial requirements for COVID-19 immunization in primary care clinics are more complex than influenza vaccine requirements, and as such not all physicians/NPs will likely be able to provide vaccine to their patients. If you would like to consider administering AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine in your clinic, please email covidvaccinepartners@ottawa.ca for more details.

Provincial requirements include:

  • COVAX training and accounts for each immunizer and support in the office (Training and resources by OntarioMD – English only)
  • Protocols in place for vaccine storage and handling as well as vaccine administration
  • Scheduling/booking system overseen by your office
  • Protocol for vaccination tracking to submit to public health
  • Security plan for your office
  • And a signed Letter of Agreement

More resources on the vaccine and vaccinating in clinic can be found on the Ontario College of Family Physicians website.
