Dear colleagues,

Earlier this month, the Ministry of Health informed us that as a result of manufacturer/production issues there are delays in the delivery schedule of the high-dose trivalent influenza vaccine (HD-TIV) vaccine to the province. As a result, the amount of HD-TIV received to date by Ottawa Public Health (OPH) has been lower than previously anticipated.

OPH has now distributed all the doses of the HD-TIV that we have been allotted for the months of October and November. The Ministry of Health has informed us that the next shipment of HD-TIV to OPH is expected on December 12, 2019. OPH will be able to accept orders for HD-TIV on December 13, 2019.

In addition, our current supply of quadrivalent influenza vaccine (QIV) is low. The vaccine distribution centre staff may contact your office to adjust orders based on the quantity available. Our next shipment of QIV is expected on December 5, 2019 and OPH will be able to accept larger orders on December 6, 2019.

The National Advisory Committee on Immunization has stated that there is insufficient evidence to make a preferential recommendation between HD-TIV and QIV for people 65 years and older. Both vaccines are effective and recommended for seniors. The most important thing is for seniors to get the vaccine that is available in their location without delay.

For more information, please refer to the “Professionals and Health Care Professionals” section of our website.

We will update it as more details become available from the Ministry of Health.

Additional resources for health care providers can be found on the Ministry of Health website. Please contact us at healthsante@ottawa.ca or 613-580-6744 if you have questions related to this year’s UIIP.

Thank you for your patience and for your ongoing contributions to the influenza immunization program.
