According to Diabetes Canada, one in 300 children has type 1 diabetes, a chronic condition in which the pancreas produces little or no insulin. Insulin is a hormone that helps your body to control the level of glucose (sugar) in your blood. Without insulin, sugar builds up in your blood instead of being used for energy. Low blood sugar can be life threatening if not treated.
