Meningococcal Vaccine: Transition from Men-C-C to Men-C-ACYW

Subject: Meningococcal Vaccine: Transition from Men-C-C to Men-C-ACYW
Dear Colleagues,
The Ministry of Health is making a change to Ontario’s meningococcal vaccine program; the routine childhood immunization program is transitioning to the use of quadrivalent conjugate meningococcal vaccines (Men-C-ACYW) and will discontinue use of monovalent conjugate meningococcal serogroup C vaccine (Men-C-C).
This transition to Men-C-ACYW for routine childhood immunizations is occurring due to manufacturing changes rather than a shift in epidemiology of disease. Men-C-C is being discontinued and will no longer be available in Canada.
Following the transition from Men-C-C to Men-C-ACYW, two doses of Men-C-ACYW will be publicly funded under the routine immunization program:
- One dose at 12 months of age
- One dose in Grade 7
Please note:
- Continue to administer Men-C-C vaccines (Menjugate Liquid and NeisVac-C) for routine immunization and catch-up, as per the current publicly funded immunization schedule, until product expiry or depletion of existing inventory.
- Ottawa Public Health will continue to supply Men-C-C until existing stock is depleted.
- After depletion of existing vaccine inventory, please transition to the use of Men-C-ACYW.
- Children who received a dose of Men-C-C at ≥12 months of age do not require revaccination with Men-C-ACYW, due to the change in program. Individuals will remain eligible for the routine dose of Men-C-ACYW in Grade 7, as per the existing publicly funded program.
