Self-directed virtual prenatal class

OPH recognizes the importance of prenatal education for expectant parents in Ottawa so we organized this page to provide you with information and resources we think can be useful during this period.   

The information is arranged in three main themes:

Objectives:

  • How to prepare for labour and birth. 
  • The four stages of labour. 
  • How to time contractions. 
  • When to go to the hospital/birthing centre and/or when to call the midwife. 
  • Comfort measures in labor (positions, medications,…)

  • Importance of breastfeeding, skin‐to‐skin and colostrum.

Community Prenatal Services

Explore prenatal services to find the care, support, and information you need for a healthy pregnancy.

Carlington CHC offers ongoing support from the moment you know you are pregnant until 6 months after your baby is born. Their Perinatal Parent Support Program supports all Ottawa Residents with free services including prenatal classes, parent support classes, breastfeeding support (before and after birth), mental health support and one-on-one individualized support.

Free Prenatal Breastfeeding Workshops: 
  • Offered in person and virtually
  • Wednesdays, once monthly, evenings on Zoom or in person at 1365 Richmond Road location
  • Facilitated by a registered nurse/International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant
  • Reviews how you make milk for your baby, have a good milk supply, handle common breastfeeding challenges and access community resources for breastfeeding support 

Free Preparing for Parenting Workshops: 
  • Offered virtually on Zoom 
  • Facilitated by a registered nurse/International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant 
  • Topics include: Labour and Delivery Basics, Building Your Milk Supply, Infant Sleep, Bringing Baby home and Caring for your Sick baby

Free Pregnancy and Postpartum Support Group (CPNP): 
  • Canada Prenatal Nutrition Program 
  • Facilitated by a Parent Support Worker, RN/IBCLC and registered dietician 
  • Hybrid group for mothers that meets weekly on Wednesday mornings, online one week and in person the next to cook together 
  • Participants join this group in pregnancy and can stay with the group until baby is 6 months old 
  • Space is limited, if interested, please email Cathy at c.renouf@pqchc.com 

Free Prenatal Breastfeeding Support: 
  • Offered by telephone and in person with a registered nurse/International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant  
  • Can be booked prenatally (when still pregnant) to review concerns or postpartum (once baby is born), from birth to weaning 
  • All clients must do a telephone appointment first, in person appointments will be booked by the RN/IBCLC as needed during this call 
  • Clients can book online for a telephone breastfeeding support appointment.
  • An Ontario health card (OHIP) is required to use the online booking system; if you do not have a health card, please contact breastfeeding@pqchc.com or call 613-820-4922 x3604 to book – all are welcome! 

Feeding Foundations - Breastfeeding Your Baby with Confidence from the Start:
  • FREE weekly virtual group for breastfeeding parents 36 weeks pregnant and above
  • Meet with a nurse/lactation consultant to review how to prepare for breastfeeding, discuss hand expression and ask questions of the experts to increase breastfeeding confidence before baby's arrival
  • Opportunity to book 1:1 phone or in person session with the RN/IBCLC
